About

When Matisse’s Femme au chapeau debuted, art collector Leo Stein called it “brilliant and powerful,” but also deemed it “the nastiest smear of paint [I had ever seen].” His sister Gertrude Stein bought it anyway. That’s the spirit we’re channeling tonight. Join us for an evening of hands-on art making inspired by Matisse’s scandalous portrait. Craft your own chapeau, paint a boldly colored portrait, or create a drawing that breaks with convention. No experience is necessary as there’s no right way to be creative. All materials and guidance provided.
