"In A Memory Place" is a dance at the border of this world and the next. This performance explores the fragile nature of memory by weaving together live music, video and masked performance. Time is elusive; beauty lingers. Is it 1930's Vienna or San Francisco today? “In a Memory Palace” will premiere with a distinguished international cast of actors and musicians. This timely production explores the fragile nature of memory. Inspired by a true story of a Catholic woman who fled Austria with her Jewish husband before Hitler’s invasion. Now portrayed as a resident of a nursing home in San Francisco, she faces the social isolation of aging in America, her past trauma as a refugee, and her blurred memories. Written in the form of Japanese Noh theater, the production features beautifully crafted masks and original music that draws on both Japanese and Viennese musical traditions. Presented by Theatre Nohgaku with Kunoichi Productions and Theatre of Yugen, the world premiere of “In A Memory Palace” will run from July 30 through August 1 at Z Space. The public is invited to participate in facilitated Story Circles which will be held prior to the premiere along with theater workshops entitled, “To Noh & Beyond”. The community is also invited to contribute photographs, recordings and videos to an ongoing art installation in the lobby of Z Space that explores the themes of migration, displacement, and assimilation from July 28 – August 1 during the hours of 11am-6pm.
