Join award-winning World Fantasy illustrator, Kathleen Jennings, in this unique workshop to make a silhouette bookplate. Discover the principles behind silhouette art, including cutting techniques, composition, and design. Use these skills to create a bookplate (ex libris) that is uniquely your own. The history of the silhouette stretches back centuries. As early as 500 AD, Pliny the Elder tells the story of Dibutade’s daughter, who is said to have captured the profile of her departing lover in a silhouette. By the late eighteenth to early nineteenth century, silhouettes had reached their height in popularity. More than a simple label, a bookplate is a personal mark of ownership identifying a book’s owner. Bookplates became popular due to the commodification of book making in the nineteenth century. Ms. Jennings’ workshop is made possible by the support of the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body.
