Skatchboxes and Skatchplates by Tom Nunn — Reception

Tom Nunn will be exhibiting a number of Skatchboxes and Skatchplates. The Skatchboxes here are part of a series of painted Skatchboxes called “Paintboxes,” created between April 2013 and February 2014. The Skatchboxes are made of cardboard boxes that originally contained computer parts (larger boxes) or computer keyboards (smaller boxes). Various objects are glued to the surface of the box and played with specially shaped soft plastic combs. The sounds are amplified using contact microphones (piezo pickups) taped to the underside of the playing surface (inside the box). Skatchplates are similar in the objects used and the use of pickups, but the body of the instrument has a flat triangular shape with open ends – the result of simply folding a single sheet of cardboard at two points. The small panel is made to fold under the playing surface for compact packing/carrying.

Vernacular Visions #22

The second installment in a series of screenings that Vernacular Visions* will be doing as part of a 3 month residency at the Center for New Music (September – November), co-curated by Justin Rhody and Tania Chen. At each performance a 35mm slideshow of found photographs will be projected while two small groupings of musical improvisers (from both Oakland and San Francisco) interpret & accompany the images with a live soundtrack. At the end of the night there will be a collaborative set between all of the musicians (who have never performed together prior and most likely do not even know each other). 1st set of the night: Bryan Day – invented instruments Jay Kreimer – invented instruments 2nd set of the night: Jon Raskin – sax & electronics Matt Davignon – warped drum machines Final set of the night: Bryan Day – invented instruments Jon Raskin – sax & electronics Jay Kreimer – invented instruments Matt Davignon – warped drum machines *VERNACULAR VISIONS is a curated collection of found color photo slides presented by Justin Clifford Rhody via 35mm projections, which are accompanied by an audio mix of related (and unrelated) sounds & musics. Every other month, half of the nights program is dedicated to presenting the work of a local photographer or filmmaker. This ongoing series is an exploration and celebration of the medium and it’s subjects, spoken and coded in the visual dialect of the amateur practitioner. The show is presented in a relaxed environment that offers the opportunity of meditative contemplation, as well as casual and comfortable social interaction.
